Frequently asked questions
Where will the programmes be conducted?
We are currently serving at Pangsapuri Sri Aman, Section 22, Petaling Jaya (a 3-minute walk from Taman Paramount LRT).
When will the programmes start?
Our academic tutoring programme is still ongoing. Visit our Instagram account @ajarlokal for more upcoming programmes and events!
Who can volunteer?
Do join us if you are:
Aged 18 and above.
Able to commute to our location at least once per week on a weekday night.
Able to converse well in Malay and English.
Patient, creative and passionate in teaching children.
Can I join without experience?
Yes! Youβre welcome to join us, no prior experience in teaching is required. It would only be an added advantage if you do.
What is my main role as a volunteer?
As a volunteer tutor, you will conduct weekly English, Malay, Maths or Science night tuition classes for Primary 4 to 6 students. You will be teaching the classes physically alongside other volunteer tutors.
Do I have other responsibilities aside from tutoring?
Prior to each tutoring session, you will discuss matters relevant to the syllabus with other volunteer tutors. You may also be tasked to plan interactive games and activities to enhance the childrenβs learning experience.
What time do the classes commence and end?
Classes are normally conducted from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Please note that you are expected to reach at least 15 minutes earlier to ensure a smoother learning experience for the students.
How long do I need to commit?
You will have to commit for a minimum period of 4 months, 2-3 hours weekly on a weekday night. We highly encourage our volunteers to stay for the whole academic year to witness the children's growth and build good rapport with them.
Can I still volunteer if I'm not sure about my upcoming schedule?
You are encouraged to apply if you can commit at least once per week on a weekday night (for 4 months). Otherwise, feel free to reach out to our team on Instagram and we will work around this together.
What if unexpected commitments clashed with my volunteering schedule, what should I do?
To ensure consistency in teaching, we strongly encourage our volunteers to attend all their scheduled classes. We understand that emergencies may arise once in a while. In cases like this, do inform us earlier and let the rest of the team know about your teaching plan for the day.
Do I have to prepare my own teaching materials?
You will be provided with relevant teaching materials. Your main responsibility includes managing teaching plans and conducting classes. However, you are allowed to self-source extra materials that may help with the studentsβ learning.
I have signed up as a volunteer, what do I do next?
After submitting your volunteer registration form, we will contact you within a week via email or WhatsApp to schedule a quick chat. This would allow us to know you better, as well as provide you a better understanding of our organisation and your roles.
Once your role as a volunteer is confirmed, you will go through a simple onboarding process. We will help you familiarise with the teaching process and prepare you for the upcoming tutoring sessions.
I am interested in volunteering, but teaching is not my strongest suit. Are there any other volunteer roles aside from tutoring?
Currently, we only have volunteer tutor roles available. More roles may be established in the future as we expand our organisation. We will announce such opportunities on our social media accounts when that happens.
Or better yet, you are welcome to propose or lead a new social project of your choice. Just reach out to us and weβll work this out together!
